Emma was born in 1664 CE in the countryside of the British Isles. Her village held about 400 people. She lived in a half-timbered thatched house. In a family of seven children, she was the seventh. Her father died when she was 4, and she was left an orphan at 10. Emma's food was mostly oat and barley bread, pork and dairy, and potatoes, with seasonal apples.

She spoke Welsh and followed Christianity. The household she was born into lived on roughly $6.58 a day per person in today's money, about two and a half times the line the world now calls extreme poverty. When she was 3, haze from the distant eruption of Shikotsu in Japan turned the sunsets red and cooled the year a little.

She was 10 when she died of malnutrition. After death, she was buried in consecrated ground beside the church, in a shroud, and later in a coffin.

In 40,627 BCE, on the North China Plain, near present-day Zhengzhou, a boy was born, unnamed in any record that survives. He belonged to a mobile band of about 50 people. He lived in a brush or grass windbreak. In a family of four children, he was the first. Both his parents died when he was 44. He ate largely wild millet and acorns, river fish, deer, and wild greens, with jujubes and wild plums for fruit. He was about 171 cm in height (5 ft 7 in).

Of his four children, two boys and a girl survived past childhood. He never went farther than 9 days' walk, to the far edge of the band's seasonal range. He spoke an unrecorded prehistoric language and followed animism and shamanism. By occupation he was a hunter.

He lived 51 years, dying in an accident. He left a single grandchild behind.
